BURSE-ah-rah  sim-ah-ROO-bah

 

Explanation of name: Genus named for Joachim Burser (1583-1649), German physician and botanist (DEH). Simaruba refers to the genus Simaruba which has similar leaves.

Natural range: New World tropics, including South Florida

Recognition: Famous for its mottled, peeling, coppery and green bark, this tree has an open Growth form and alternate pinnate, entire-margined leaves. Flowers inconspicuous, fruits pea-sized and reddish

Landscape uses: Fast-growing, native tree useful as a specimen, forgiving of diverse conditions.

Notes: This species is dioecious with separate male and female individuals. Propagate by cuttings.
